Architectural Design Studio 5: Option Studios - Phiffer / Greenberg
"City / Campus - Borderlands"
Instructors: Adrian Phiffer and Ken Greenberg
The "City / Campus - Borderlands" studio starts from the premise that the University of Toronto, as it tries to accommodate its next generation of needs for growth and change and enhancing the life of its staff, students and faculty, begins to play a more proactive and collaborative role in the transformation of the City of Toronto neighborhoods that surround it. Operating at the intersection of architecture and urbanism, the studio will explore new building, landscape and open space typologies that need to respond to intricate set of users and interests. The challenge is to conceive a form of city that can represent diverse players ranging from simple neighborhood coalitions, to complex academic, administrative and student-based recreational entities that compose the edge of the campus. Through a series of assignments the students will explore how the university campus is growing and evolving with soft edges and fluid boundaries – socially, intellectually, physically.
