The Spine – reconnecting the city

Studio scenario:

Toronto is the fifth largest city in North America, home to a population of over 5 million people.

It is the year 2015. Waterfront Toronto has finished an ambitious revitalization of Queens Quay, re-establishing a strong link between the City’s southern edge and its waterfront. This follows hard on the heels of the City of Toronto’s renovation of Bloor Street, giving a new face to one of the City’s prime artery. Unfortunately there’s still the lack of a strong and consistent link from the waterfront back to the core of the City.

The City has set up a new agency with the mandate to establish two or more north south linkages – which in conjunction with the completed work on Queens Quay and Bloor Street will define the core of the City proper. The ‘City Core’ Initiative aims to define a boundary of great, civic streets that will serve as a modern day ceremonial walk around the Central District.
