Gary Pieters

Gary Pieters is President of Toronto’s Urban Alliance on Race Relations.  He is also currently Co-Chair of the Embracing Hope Building Community (a project of 30 community groups), a member of the steering committee for the Ontario Common Front Assembly (of the Ontario Federation of Labour-Community Alliance), and Editor of the Canadian Black Heritage in the Third Millennium Website.

  Previous posts, among many, are with UNAIDS, the Multilingual Community Interpreter Services, DiverseCity Voices, the Canadian Olympic Committee, The Canadian Race Relations Foundation, and the TCHC Advisory Committee n Children and Youth Services. Gary Pieters has contributed to a large number of op eds and other articles in news publications, has given 24 presentations as a speaker and conference participant in recent years, and has won numerous awards.

Scot Wortley

Dr. Wortley is a Professor at the Centre for Criminology and Socio-legal Studies, University of Toronto, where he currently Graduate Coordinator, is the Director of Undergraduate Studies in Criminology, Woodsworth College.  In 2001 he was appointed the Justice and Law Domain Leader at the Centre of Excellence for Research on Immigration and Settlement (CERIS).  In 2007, he was appointed by Metropolis to the position of National Priority Leader for research on Justice, Policing and Security.  Professor Wortley has also served as the Research Director for the Toronto District School Board’s School Community Safety Advisory Panel and the Ontario Government’s Roots of Youth Violence Inquiry. Among his current research projects are studies on immigration and crime, racial perceptions of  justice in Toronto, and police racial profiling.
