JANE JACOBS, UNDONE

In the 50-plus years since urban thinker, author, and activist Jane Jacobs wrote The Death and Life of Great American Cities, her ideas about what makes a healthy, vibrant, and successful city have significantly influenced planning and urban design practices across the globe. Jacobs herself has become a mythic — some might even say sacred — icon credited for turning the planning profession on its head.

Alfredo Brillembourg was born in New York in 1961. He received his Bachelor of Art and Architecture in 1984 and his Master of Science in Architectural Design in 1986 from Columbia University. In 1992, he received a second architecture degree from the Central University of Venezuela and began his independent practice in architecture. In 1993 he founded Urban-Think Tank (U-TT) in Caracas, Venezuela.

John May is Assistant Professor in the Daniels Faculty and founding partner in First Office, a Los Angeles-based design practice. He previously held joint appointments in the Department of Geography and the Department of Architecture + Urban Design at the University of California, Los Angeles, where he was a UC Chancellor's Fellow and an Associate Researcher in the Institute of the Environment.

David Gissen is a historian and theorist of architecture and urbanism. He is associate professor of architecture and visual studies and coordinator of the  history/theory curriculum for architecture at the California College of the Arts. His recent work specifically focuses on developing a novel concept of nature in architectural thought and the parameters for an experimental form of practice in architectural history.

David Phillips has been employed with Environment Canada's weather service for over 40 years.  His work activities relate to the study of the climate of Canada and to promote awareness and understanding of weather and climate in Canada. This lecture will help architects, landscape architects and engineers appreciate the importance of applied meteorology in the face of accelerated climate change.
