16.09.13 - An Te Liu's exhibition MONO NO MA "explores the space around things" at the Gardiner Museum

On September 6, Associate Professor An Te Liu celebrated the opening of his exhibit MONO NO MA, part of the Gardiner Museum's Artist Intervention series.

The show, which "explores the space around things," was also recently reviewed in the Toronto Star. "Liu's work is arresting and cheeky, chock full of playful dualities, and frankly gorgeous," writes Visual Arts critic Murray Whyte.

With works like White Dwarf, or earlier pieces like Cloud and Blast, also cobbled from cast-off electronics, Liu has always grappled with the worrying dynamic of obsolescence – what happens to a thing when it outlives its use? Mono No Ma takes it one step further, extracting forms whose purpose was so specific that they ceased to be useful the moment you cut through the packing tape.
