19.09.13 - Daniels Students finalists in the 2013 Sukkahville design competition

On Sunday September 22, six teams — all finalists in the 2013 Sukkahville design competition — will see their concepts for shelters, inspired by traditional Jewish Sukkah, come to life in Toronto's Mel Lastman Square. The architectural designs will highlight the need for permanent affordable housing in the Greater Toronto Area.

Finalists in the competition include a team made up of Daniels Faculty students Jason van der Burg, Jesse Hao, Duncan Sabiston, Dave Freedman, and David Whyte, who were selected for their project “Spiral Sukkah," pictured at the top of this post.

“Ombres Lumineuses” (pictured below), a project by Daniels Faculty student Katrina Novak and Concordia University MFA graduate Duc Tran also made the final six.

The public is welcome to experience the Sukkahs and meet the design teams on September 22. The winners will be announced that afternoon around 4:00 PM. The family-friendly event will also feature live music by Klezconnection, an urban agriculture display and mobile food market by FoodShare. MArch student Craig Deebank, a finalist in last year's competition, will also be working with Habitat for Humanity to construct a community Sukkah. The Sukkahs will be on display until September 24th.
