07.02.13 - Liat Margolis receives LACF grant for forthcoming Out of Water book
Congratulations to Assistant Professor Liat Margolis, who recently received a grant from the Landscape Architecture Canada Foundation for the forthcoming book Out of Water — Design Solutions for Arid Regions.
LACF's annual grant proposals are adjudicated and awarded by a national jury composed of six individuals from public and private practice with academic credentials representing the Atlantic, Quebec, Ontario, the prairies, British Columbia and Canada’s north.
Out of Water — Design Solutions for Arid Regions is a book focused on design issues and strategies for water scarcity in arid regions. It is intended to serve as a reference for educational instruction and professional practice in landscape, architecture and urban design.
The book tackles 3 primary issues: the emergence of efficiency, resilience and multi-functionality in facing scarcity; the necessity for a multidisciplinary exchange with experts outside of the design fields (including water engineering, agronomy, climatology and policy) in order to have a broader understanding of technology and its relation to socioeconomic and geopolitical factors; and the potential for design to integrate and re-imagine water and sanitation technology and infrastructure in relation to human settlement, both rural and urban. The book includes 15 case studies and 10 essays, which have been assembled in this volume to discuss and evaluate currently implemented solutions with respect to their efficiency and geographic relevance. Through a common set of analytical graphics, the book’s format highlights common facets for each case study, while extracting key implementation tools.
