Associate Professor Shane Williamson’s firm Williamson Chong has won a prestigious Canadian Architect Award of Excellence for House on Fox Lake. The award was announced today in Canadian Architect, the national magazine of record for architects across Canada.

Now in their 46^th year, the Canadian Architect awards offer the highest recognition for excellence in the design stage in the Canadian architectural sector. By focusing on commissioned but not yet completed projects along with exceptional student work, the program recognizes design ambition and supports an overall culture of design excellence.

The design for House on Fox Lake, Located in Huntsville, Ontario, includes the use of natural materials to reinterpret the Hanok, a traditional Korean house.

“The clarity from concept to execution was just outstanding,” said juror Michael Green, principal at Michael Green Architecture (MGA), of the project. “We hope to see more projects that bring a unique cultural perspective that’s important to Canadian identity and diversity, and that build on those traditions in really provocative ways.”

Juror Tyler Sharp, design principal at RDH Architects, commended the House on Fox Lake as “an elegant project that is very well resolved formally and intellectually. The resulting design illustrates a clear abstraction and translation of the cultural and historic characteristics of its client.”

A total of eleven Canadian Architect awards were announced. In all, the jury selected 6 projects for Awards of Excellence, 3 projects for Awards of Merit, and 2 projects for Student Awards of Excellence.

In addition to Green and Sharp, this year’s jury included Éric Gauthier, principal at Les Architectes FABG.
