Aziza Chaouni was awarded a grant from the Jeffrey Cook Charitable Trust to design an eco-desert hotel, which will be run by a local NGO Zayla. Prof. Chaouni is currently leading two workshops in Rabat and Mhamid El Ghizlane, located in the Moroccan Sahara, to research local construction methods, water management systems and planting strategies to combat desertification. Robert Wright's sponsored student team of Luigi Discenza, Tonya Crawford, Jacob Mitchell and Courtney Likins who received an honorable mention in the 2007-2008 International Student Competition for "New Visions of Security: Re-Life of a DFW Airport Terminal", are now published in the competition booklet. Their project entitled "Securing the Terminal Landscape" is featured on pages 46-51.

It is with mixed feelings that I announce the appointment of Professor Charles Waldheim of the Daniels Faculty, as Chair of the Department of Landscape Architecture at the Harvard University Graduate School of Design, commencing July 1, 2009. We thank Professor Waldheim for his exemplary service as faculty member, as Director of the Landscape Architecture program, and as Associate Dean here at the Daniels Faculty. His contributions to the Faculty will be sorely missed, but we wish him well in his future career.

I am pleased to announce that together with collaborator Takako Tajima, Professor Aziza Chaouni of the Daniels Faculty has been awarded the top global prize that is offered this year by the Holcim Foundation. The Gold Holcim Award, valued at US$300,000 has been awarded to Professor Chaouni and her collaborator for their project for river remediation and urban development in Fez, Morocco.

The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee School of Architecture and Urban Planning, through the vision and generosity of Milwaukee’s Marcus Corporation Foundation, initiated a bi-yearly architectural prize to recognize the talent and achievements of young architects at the beginning of their greatness. The award brings international recognition to the subject of architecture and provides an opportunity for architects, at the early stages of their career, to be recognized for their outstanding work to date – and their promise of greatness in the future. The previous recipients of the Prize, initiated in 2005, are MVRDV (Rotterdam) and Barkow Leibinger Architects (Berlin). [more...]

Student work from LAN 2014, the fourth-term core studio taught by Jane Wolff and Elise Shelley, was presented by David Waggonner at the American Planning Association’s National Conference in Minneapolis this week as part of his discussion of the Dutch Dialogues initiative. This non-profit effort seeks to develop new strategies for water management in New Orleans; it involves landscape architects, engineers, and planners from North America and the Netherlands. [more...]

Pete North, Elise Shelley, and Jane Wolff were panelists in the OALA Ground Magazine's Round Table on Tuesday, April 28, 2009. Thematically tied to the fall issue of Ground: Landscape Architect quarterly, Innovation in Landscape Architecture, the subject was narrowed to the University setting, both in terms of instruction and research. The session was moderated by Victoria Carley and focused on how faculty build research skills in teaching and the participant's own research. [more...]
