Maha Salman
Maha Salman got her B.Sc. and M.Sc. in Architectural Engineering from the University of Baghdad, then her PhD in Sustainability & Architecture from the University of Huddersfiled/UK. Since her graduation in 1985, she has worked as a member of the teaching staff at University of Baghdad, until 1996 when she joined University of Derna/Libya. Since 2002, Dr. Salman has worked in the United Arab Emirates as an architect and a university professor until 2006 when she came to Canada. Maha has worked at Uot as a sessional Lecturer for ARC132 "Contemporary Architecture"-Winter 2008 and ARC233 "Postcolonial Studies in Architecture"-Winter 2009.
In addition to her work as an academic, Dr. Salman has worked as an architect and interior designer for different projects in Iraq, Libya, and the UAE. She worked as an Islamic architecture consultant for the project of Ministry of Justice and Islamic Affairs proposal in Dubai/UAE and participated as a consultant within a team in conservation of the old mosque in Derna city as part of developing and persevering the old city traditional urban fabric and buildings in Libya.
She has participated in many conferences and symposiums around the world and conducted many researches and studies in the aspects of sustainability, environmental design, and vernacular architecture. Dr. Salman has received several scientific recognition and merit awards from different institutions such as the “Best Paper Award for Innovation in Research & Practice for GCC Countries” from Institute of Urban & Regional Planning & Design of the American University in Sharjah/UAE - Sharjah 8th Urban Planning Symposium, and "The Vice Chancellor's Award for an Outstanding Research Degree Thesis" from the University of Huddersfiled for a dissertation titled "Sustainability Potential of Traditional Architecture in the Arab World-with Reference to Domestic Buildings in the United Arab Emirates". Maha enjoys reading, travelling, and photography.
