New Users Guide

Below are some tips on getting started using the daniels computing resources.

1. ACCOUNT  You will need an account to access the computing resources at the Faculty. For students, accounts are created automatically from ROSI registration information. You will receive an email to your U to T account from us inviting you to activate your computer account. You will need to come to the Faculty to complete the process by logging into any lab or library computer at which point you will be prompted to change your password.  Faculty members please come to room 105, where we will be happy to create an account for you.

2. CONNECTING TO THE NETWORK  In the Faculty, students connect using one of the available Wireless access resources. To use the Faculty's computing resources you will likely use FTP to access yout files, our printing client called "pharos pop-up" for printing, or a VPN connection in addition to the wireless connection or your high-speed DSL connection from home. VPN will allow you to download and launch software provided by the Faculty.

3. COURSE DIRECTORIES, PERSONAL DIRECTORIES  Course directories contain shared files. These directories are automatically created each year from ROSI registration information. Your Personal directory is called your 'home' directory. This is where you can put files you are working on that you do not wish to share in the course directory. You should become familiar with the file structure so you can navigate around the network.

4. PRINTING AND "PLOTTING"  There is a charge for all printing or "plotting" (large format printing) at the Faculty. Colour and black & white laser printing can be done directly from your own computer using software called "pharos pop-up" (because it pops-up and asks for your username when you print) or a lab computer. 'Plotting' is done through the web with our service called WebPlot or directly by using OCE printing computer station in the printing area. You can monitor plots you have submitted by viewing the WebPlot Queue or on the OCE printing computer.  If you want to check your print account balance, your recent transactions, or any error messages - this is the place to look.

5. SOFTWARE  The Faculty provides a variety of software for students to download and install on their computers. All software is network licensed and network-locked - which means that in order to download and install the software you need to be connected to our network via wireless or a high speed connection at home. Additionally you need to have a software network client (called 'keyserver') for Adobe products and a VPN connection.

6. GETTING HELP  Fellow students staff a Help Desk area during evenings and weekends for after-hours support. During daytime hours, support is available in room 105. Questions can also be directed to the Systems Administration's email group. The announcements area of the website is good for up-to-minute information - especially network outages, server problems, etc.
