Call for Submissions: The Annual Publication
Hello Daniels students,
This is an open call for submissions to Daniels students in any year or program who wish to submit work to be published in The Annual Publication. Winning submissions will be published as part of an 'Exemplary Projects' section.
As you may know, The Annual is published in December of each year. It acts as a record not only of the theses which have been presented the year before, but also as a showcase for the school, and the work being done by faculty and students. In addition to each thesis student presenting their work, there are also pages reserved for faculty articles and exemplary projects from other courses and studios.
This year, the theme of the publication is Crisis as Catalyst. “Crises are ultimately productive. They force invention. Breakdowns incubate breakthroughs. Radical destruction gives way to new forms of production... Architectural design is the child of crisis” (Mark Wigley, "Space in Crisis," Volume Magazine, Iss. 19). The year 2009 has seen its fair share of crisis. Between peak oil costs, economic upheaval, mortgage market failure, environmental uncertainty, food shortage, global pandemic, and geo-political instability, crisis is at the forefront of the public psyche. As architects designing and building within this context, identifying the role of these crises within architecture is now critical. If crisis is the precondition for design, then how might architecture respond to its new landscape of upheaval? Have we seen the cultural imagination shift away from the starchitecture of late capitalism, and toward more pragmatic design in a zero-sum economic framework? Or has design thinking moved toward more utopian propositions in the face of new global paradigms? From within this time of crisis comes an opportunity for the profession to cross the boundaries of the familiar and make new connections -- whether it be in the form of speculation, implementation, or critique.
If you have a studio project or short paper which you think would apply to this theme (even loosely) then we would like to hear from you. Even if you are not certain that your project addresses the theme, we would still like to hear from you. Projects will be juried anonymously by a panel of recently graduated students. The deadline for file submissions is Monday September 28th.
Here's how you can submit your work for jurying. Create a 11"x17" PDF which presents your project/essay, and send it to us digitally at <theannual.daniels@gmail.com>. No attachments larger than 3MB will be accepted. Please name your PDF file as follows: lastname_firstname_program.PDF. Your name must not appear on the panel itself, in order to keep the jurying process anonymous. If you are submitting a design project, your written description should be integrated into the PDF panel, and should be no more than 250 words. If you are submitting a short paper (or an excerpt of a longer paper), it may be no longer than 750 words.
Don't hesitate to email your questions and concerns to us at <theannual.daniels@gmail.com>.
Your Annual team,
