Last March, the Daniels Faculty, in partnership with Metrolinx and IVM – City on the Move Institute, launched an international competition to explore how infrastructure along Toronto’s new Sheppard East Light Rail Transit (LRT) line could be interwoven with existing local, small-scale pedestrian networks.

The Sheppard East LRT line is part of municipal plans that call for growth that is less dependent upon the automobile. Under these plans, new development is directed to areas well-served by public transit. Existing infrastructure is used efficiently and wherever possible, making transit, cycling, and walking more attractive alternatives to the car.

Titled Middle City Passages, our dual phased competition was open to young professionals and emerging practices in architecture, urban design, landscape architecture, urban planning, and related disciplines. Six teams from Canada, USA, Italy, Slovakia, Belgium and United Kingdom were selected (among 45 entries representing 29 nationalities) for the workshop in Toronto.

On July 2^nd, the six teams shortlisted for the competition will arrive at the Daniels Faculty to meet with coaches and complete their proposals.

On Thursday, July 9, the teams will make their final presentations to the jury, who will announce the winning team at the end of the day.
