The Justice in Toronto Lecture Series addresses some of the sources of injustice in Toronto and proposes ways to make the city more just. In each event, an academic scholar has been paired with a city activist. On Thursday, April 24, we present the last lecture of the year: Education & Justice in Toronto.

BIOS:

Annie Kidder is the Executive Director of People for Education. Growing up in four provinces, she attended 12 primary and secondary schools, which may have been how she acquired her passion for public education. A former theatre director, Annie became involved in education through the schools of her two daughters. She is the recipient of numerous awards for her advocacy work, including the Canadian Teachers’ Federation, the Ontario Principals’ Council, the Toronto Community Foundation and the Ontario Teachers’ Federation. She has spoken at conferences across the country and is regularly quoted in the media as an expert on education issues.

Ghanaian-born George Dei Professor is Professor of Social Justice Education at OISE/UT and one of Canada’s foremost scholars on race and anti-racism. He has authored 26 books and 160 articles. In addition to holding several other posts, he was a member of the City of Toronto Mayor’s Roundtable on Children, Youth and Education and of the Postsecondary Education Advisory Committee on First Generation Students. Among his many honours are the 2014 Distinguished Teaching Award at OISE for excellence in teaching and the Ludwik and Estelle Jus Memorial Human Rights Prize, also in 2014.
