Project-Based Awards
Heather M. Reisman Gold Medal in Design
Eligible program(s): MArch, MLA, MUD
Awarded to the student graduating from the Faculty of Architecture, Landscape, and Design in recognition of exceptional achievement in design in architecture, landscape architecture, or urban design.
Faculty Design Prize
Eligible programs: MArch, MLA, MUD
Awarded to graduating students in the Master of Architecture, Master of Landscape Architecture or Master of Urban Design programs in recognition of their ability and high achievement in design, as deomonstrated over the course of their studies in the program.
Toronto Society of Architects Scholarship
Eligible program(s): MArch, MUD
Awarded to a graduating student to the Master of Architecture or Master of Urban Design program, whose thesis project demonstrates an innovative approach to city building and urban form.
Leadership-Based Awards
Alpha Rho Chi Bronze Medal
Eligible program(s): MArch
Awarded to the graduating senior in the Master of Architecture program who has shown an affinity for leadership, performed willing service for the school or department, and gives promise of real professional merit through his or her attitude and personality. The Alpha Rho Chi Medal commends those students who show true professional merit beyond the design studio and their academic career.
OALA Certificate of Merit
Eligible program(s): MLA
Awarded to a student in the Master of Landscape Architecture program on the basis of academic excellence and contribution to the program.
Merit-Based Awards
Academic Honours Certificate
Eligible programs: MArch, MLA, MUD, MVS
Awarded to the top graduating master's students in recognition of their record of high academic achievement over the course of their studies.
AIA Henry Adams Medal and Certificate Program
Eligible program(s): MArch
Each year The American Institute of Architects awards an engraved medal and certificate of merit to the top-ranking graduating student in each architecture program accredited by the National Architectural Accrediting Board (or CACB for Canadian schools). A certificate of merit is awarded to the second-ranking graduating student. These awards are provided as part of the AIA Scholarship Program.
Royal Architectural Institute of Canada Honour Roll and Medal
Eligible program(s): MArch
Awarded to students of an accredited professional degree program of Architecture in Canada who have achieved high academic standing in the top 10% of their graduating class. For each School of Architecture, a maximum of four students from the top 10 per cent of the graduating class shall receive honour roll certificates from Architecture Canada.
In addition the top student shall also receive the RAIC Student Medal. Royal Architectural Institute of Canada Medal is awarded annually to a student graduating from a professional degree program in each accredited University School of Architecture in Canada who, in the judgment of the faculty of the respective School, has achieved the highest level of academic excellence and/or has completed the outstanding final design project/thesis for that academic year.
OAA Architectural Guild Medal
Eligible program(s): MArch
Awarded annually to the graduating Master of Architecture student with the highest grade.
Prix de Rome in Architecture for Emerging Practitioners
Eligible Program(s): MArch
The Prix de Rome in Architecture for Emerging Practitioners is awarded to a recent graduate from a Canadian architectural school who has demonstrated exceptional potential in contemporary architectural design. With this prize, the recipient may visit architectural buildings and carry out an internship at an internationally renowned architectural firm anywhere in the world.
The prize recipient will have the opportunity to broaden his or her knowledge of contemporary architecture culture by visiting a selection of works of architecture. The recipient will also be able to expand her or his professional skills through an internship at an internationally acclaimed architectural firm, anywhere in the world.
Applicants must define a program of work and related travels. The project can involve multiple trips to a number of destinations spread over a one-year period. Upon returning to Canada, the recipient must share his or her experience through public conferences, publications and/or exhibitions.
Eligibility is open to Canadian citizens or permanent residents who have received a professional Bachelor or Master degree from a Canadian school of architecture — that is certified by the Canadian Architectural Certification Board — within 14 months prior to the deadline for submitting applications The prize is $34,000, to contribute towards the costs of the proposed program of work and related travels, and of the proposed public presentation. Canadian Architect Student Awards of Excellence
Eligible program(s): MArch, HBA
The University of Toronto selects the work of a minimum of two (2) and a maximum of three (3) students to enter, and each entrant must be a final-year student. The Canadian Architect annual student awards are given for design excellence in architecture students’ final year projects. The winners are published in Canadian Architect magazine alongside professional award winners, and receive a cash award of $500.
The program was founded in 1987, as an accompaniment to the professional awards program, which started in 1977. Past winners have gone on to become prominent design architects, including Peter Sampson (PSA Studio), Heather Howat (Battersby Howat), Maxime Pion (NFOE & associés) and Hubert Pelletier (Pelletier de Fontenay).
Each entry is to be submitted as a PDF file, consisting of up to six (6) pages in horizontal format no larger than 11” x 17” and a maximum file size of 25 MB. An additional single feature image of the project is required, not to exceed 3 MB in size. There is the option to submit a video up to one (1) minute in length to explain the key concepts of the proposal.
ASLA Certificate of Honor and Certificate of Merit
Eligible program(s): MLA
Must be truly outstanding and have demonstrated the highest level of academic scholarship and of accomplishments in skills related to the art and technology of Landscape Architecture. Nominees must have demonstrated personal qualities and skills of: responsiveness and willingness to work with others; self-motivation and responsibility; and design abilities (exploration, discovery, synthesis, and representation of landscape architecture design). Student must have maintained a 3.5 CGPA on a 4.0 scale. Faculty can nominate up to 4 students; top 2 for the certificate of honor and second 2 for the certificate of merit.
CSLA Student Award of Merit
Eligible programs: MLA
Awarded to a graduating student who, in the opinion of the Faculty, exhibits outstanding imagination, innovation and ingenuity in their studies of Landscape Architecture, and who has contributed service to the profession in the school. The cash prize has a value of $1000.
Master in Visual Studies Graduating Scholarship
Eligible Programs: MVS
Awarded annually to an outstanding Master of Visual Studies student in their second (graduating) year concentrating in Studio Art Practice who has excelled in both the academic and studio components of the MVS program to aid in the transition from academia to post graduate life.
