16.04.15 - Daniels Faculty students, professors, and alumni to participate in the 3rd Annual Gladstone Grow Op — April 23-26

The 3rd annual Gladstone Hotel Grow Op exhibition kicks off on April 23rd and runs until the 26th. The annual event, which “celebrates innovative ideas and conceptual responses to landscape, gardens, art, and place-making,” is curated by Daniels Faculty Alumna Victoria Taylor (MLA 2008) along with Graham Teeple and Britt Welter-Nolan. This year's theme is “the culture of landscape.”

A number of Daniels Faculty students, professors, instructors, and alumni are participating in this year's event, including Liat Margolis, Scott MacIvor, Elise Hunchuck, David Kossowsky, and Nicolas Gosselin.

Ben Watt-Meyer (MLA 2012) will be exhibiting a piece on the Leslie Street Spit, Toronto’s largest constructed breakwater, where “the discarded structures of countless demolished buildings found their resting place.” The exhibition will also showcase work by Daniels Faculty instructor and urban designer, Julie Bogdanowicz. Entitled MOUNDS AT WORK, her installation will explore how septic mounds “create a sublime landscape expression.”

Alumni Jasmeen Kaur Bains (MLA 2013) and Yi Zhou (MLA 2013), of the research-based practice Studio for Landscape Culture, will showcase their work on the sounds that plants emit "when undergoing physiological processes."

"These 'voices' differ based on anatomy and habitat," they explain, "changing over the couse of a day, week, month, and year."

Nomadic Vision Studio — a collective of Master of Architecture students from the Daniels Faculty that includes Clair Kurtin, Nadia Pulez, and Ramin Yamin — will present Flore Synthetica (pictured above). The installation "explores the notion of artificiality and landscape through a contradictory sensory experience."

The Grow Op’s opening reception takes place Friday, April 24 from 7:00 - 10:00pm and is $10 to attend. The reception will be followed by an After Party with Uma Nota & Samba Squad (10:00pm to late).
