Women Changing Architecture graphic design by Stéphane Huot

Women Changing Architecture, first presented as an exhibition at Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) in the fall of 2024 and at the Centre de design de l'UQAM in the spring of 2025, features the works of thirty-two women from Ontario and Quebec. 

Now available in book form, Femmes architectes du changement / Women Changing Architecture, by Louise Pelletier (UQAM) with Lisa Landrum (TMU), Jennifer Esposito (TMU) and Jonathan Tourangeau (UQAM), showcases “engaged practices that, for over four decades, have helped redefine the discipline, its values, and its modes of action.” 

Publisher abstract: 

"Far from being a mere generational overview, this publication reflects the diversity of approaches, scales, and issues addressed by these architects. Whether institutional, cultural, residential, or urban projects, their work explores the relationships between architecture, society, and the built environment, and responds with rigor and inventiveness to contemporary environmental, social, and cultural challenges. By highlighting these individual and collective trajectories, Women Changing Architecture invites us to recognize the fundamental contribution of women to the recent history of architecture and to reflect on the future of a discipline in constant transformation, shaped by practices that are attentive, critical, and deeply rooted in their environment."

Among the Daniels faculty and alumnae featured in the publication are Shirley Blumberg (BArch 1976), KPMB Architects; Tania Bortolotto (BArch 1993), BORTOLOTTO; Heather Dubbeldam (BArch 1994), Dubbeldam Architecture + Design; Janna Levitt (BArch 1986), LGA; and Megan Torza (MArch 2005), DTAH. Also featured are faculty members Pina Petricone (BArch 1991), Giannone Petricone Associates; Carol Phillips, Moriyama Teshima Architects; and Brigitte Shim, Shim-Sutcliffe Architects; as well as frequent lecturers and guest critics Meg Graham, Superkül and Pat Hanson, gh3*.

A book launch is being held at swipe design | books + objects (401 Richmond Street West) in Toronto on July 16.

The Women Changing Architecture exhibition is expected to travel to Vancouver and Victoria in the fall of 2026.
