Advanced Topics in the Technology of Architecture: Urban Nomad
ARC480H1 S1 (LEC0102)
Instructor: Yusuke Obuchi
This course investigates nomadic living conditions and typologies within urban contexts. Our design research will explore a wide range of scenarios — from emergency shelters used during disasters, to tourist campsites, to the mobile lifestyles of those who choose to live on the road, as well as the realities of urban homelessness and emerging future forms of nomadic living yet to come.
Throughout the first half of the semester, students will study historical and contemporary precedents, developing a comprehensive body of documentation and research. In the second half, students will design and construct their own interpretation of an “urban nomad living pod.” Our ambition — or perhaps our dream — is to spend a night in these pods, either inside or outside the Daniels Building (pending approval), or somewhere within the city as a full-scale demonstration of the work.
