AI and Urban Futures
URD1500
Instructor: Ramy Bakir (PhD)
This course aims to explore the different ways by which Artificial Intelligence (AI) is used in urban design, with a goal to further understand how our built environments could be created, and how AI was/is used to create more sustainable, efficient, and livable cities.
You will investigate cutting-edge AI tools and techniques in machine learning, data analytics, and generative design, and how they were applied to real-world urban design challenges. Through a combination of lectures, discussions, guest speakers, and research, the course will examine real-world case studies from cities like Helsinki, Singapore, and Barcelona. You'll learn about leading software in the field and discover how AI-driven approaches are used to tackle complex urban design challenges. Topics will include predictive traffic modeling, smart infrastructure, digital twins, generative urban design, and disaster management.
Additionally you'll also have a chance to make use of AI –amongst other creative presentation tools - to present your ideas and research work. By the end of this course, you'll have a better understanding and appreciation of how AI is impacting the field of urban design, while setting yourself up for success in a future where AI is a core part of our industry.
