In a time of failing democracies and an increasingly narcissistic society, when monetary interests govern all conduct and the politics of fear is the reigning discourse, this course will challenge us to overcome these obstacles by redrawing paradigms of cultural practice and employing transdisciplinary knowledge. Through intimate encounters outside the institution and walking in our urban environment, we will traverse the city in search of connection and a remediation of the other. Together we will consider what strategies, through the dual lens of artistic practice and critical architecture, can present alternative perspectives and possibilities. As a seminar course, we will address topics of landscape and politics, art and utility, art in the public sphere and “non-art publics,” populism and propaganda. Through a series of thematic readings, lectures, and walks, this course will address our responsibility as artist/architect citizens to one another and to the world around us.
