Designing With the More than Human World

URD1504H
Instructor: Zahra Ebrahim

In this unique and hands on course, students will have an opportunity to engage with the development of Toronto’s newest island, Ookwemin Minising. The site presents a generational opportunity to shape an new neighbourhood for all Torontonians and visitors to experience a rematriated river and landscape in the heart of the city – as it prepares to be a home for more than 15,000 people, alongside thousands of diverse flora and fauna, plants and animals.

Core to the development of OM is the understanding of the more-than-human world and how we may design with a lens of the natural world as equal rightsholders. The course will be taught by the team at Monumental: Daniels Adjunct Professor, Zahra Ebrahim, together with her award-winning colleagues, Sara Udow and Eunice Wong - a planner and urban designer, respectively - bringing students into a real world immersion of urban design that is collaborative with more-than-human world.

What is the river trying to say? What does the soil wish for? What are the hopes and dreams of the falcons?

Together — we’ll go on fun field trips, hang out with internationally-renowned guests and experts, and collaborate on design charrettes jam sessions to dream up a more-than-human world 🌸🐝🌿🐟🌼
