UNITED_BOTTLE

United_Bottle proposes a new form of plastic bottle designed to function as instant building material. The project’s working hypothesis is that design should think beyond the product and consider the waste for future use. The intersection of local and global distribution circuits forms the basis of the project. Taking into consideration the increasing scarcity of resources, United_Bottle suggests additional recycling circuits. The form of newly designed PET/PP bottles can efficiently fit into standardized shipping boxes, and can be filled with found materials to be used as prefabricated building units for the construction of both temporary and permanent structures.

Born 1971, Germany / Master of Architecture, ETH Zurich, 1998 / Master of Architecture, Princeton University, 2000 / Faculty Member, ETH Zurich, since 2002 / Visiting Professor, American University of Sharjah, UAE, 2005 and 2006 / Guest Professor, Syracuse University, 2008 / Lecturer, Princeton University, 2008.

Next to his visiting positions in Syracuse and Princeton for the Spring Term 2008, Dirk Hebel is currently teaching at the chair of Prof. Marc Angélil at the Department of Architecture of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich (ETH) and is head of the teaching team for the First Year Architectural Design introductory course. His research at the Department and the Institute of Urban Design addresses the city as well as the human body as a social and biological construct in order to develop new questions towards the field. In addition to the introductory level, Dirk Hebel focuses on “Research Design Studios” with international students from Bachelor to Master Level. Several of these Studios were published and received international awards.

Dirk Hebel practices architecture with his firm INSTANT, founded in 2002 with his partner Jörg Stollmann. Recent projects include the award-winning project United_Bottle, the international traveling exhibition Inventioneering_Architecture and the pneumatic installation On_Air in Berlin. In 2007 INSTANT received the “Van Alen Institute Fellowship Award”, the “Red Dot Design Award”, Best of the Best Conceptual Design, and the “Lanexess Award” Singapore.
