Toronto Society of Architects e-bulletin
Established in 1887, the TSA is a non-profit volunteer organization. Our mission is to foster a culture of architecture through the Greater Toronto region through sponsorship of events and programs. The TSA works to ensure that architecture and design are a factor in timely discussions about the ideas and processes that have an impact on our urban environment, and the business of architecture and design.

This competition was based on the idea that protecting our heritage resources—buildings, structures, landscapes, and neighbourhoods, is fundamentally about enhancing the meaning and quality of life, maintaining a unique sense of place, supporting the cultural and economic vitality of our cities, and improving the health and sustainability of the environments we inhabit.

OpenCity Projects is proud to launch TORONTO UNBOUND, an exhibition revealing the best of Toronto through design. In partnership with the City of Toronto and OCAD, the exhibit will showcase unique solutions developed by OCAD students for Toronto’s urban neighbourhoods. These range from creating a safer Corktown and integrating new residents in the riverside community to remembering Regent Park.

The Waterfront Center Annual Awards Program is a juried competition to recognize: top-quality urban waterfront projects; comprehensive waterfront plans; outstanding citizen efforts; and, student Waterfront Work.
Winners receive international recognition through a major media release announcing and describing the selected entries and a special display on our web site featuring each winner plus a special awards ceremony, reception and dinner during the Center’s annual conference.

First shown in Paris in 2007, this major exhibition on streets throughout the world was organized by the Paris-based IVM, Institut pour la ville en mouvement [City on the Move] and produced for North America by the Design Centre at the Université du Québec à Montréal (in collaboration with IVM). The exhibition is supported by the City of Montreal, and the Toronto presentation is facilitated by the John H. Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape & Design at the University of Toronto and the Consulat Général de France à Toronto.

> Shelter for the Other 90%
Deadline: Monday, August 18, 2008
The DX seeks presentations that illustrate 'Shelter Design for the Other 90%. Submissions will be exhibited in the Teknion Lounge and Chalmers Design Centre at the Design Exchange in fall of 2008 and a jury will select one winner who will be given a budget to actually produce the winning shelter. This shelter will be presented at the DX National Design Conference in the spring of 2009.
“Shelter is a basic human need. It protects us from the physical elements and provides security and a sense of belonging. Numerous individuals and groups, from manufacturers partnering with architects to grassroots activists for the homeless, are exploring innovative materials and building methods to provide temporary, transitional, or permanent structures for the disadvantaged.
