Malcove Talk

Romanian Renaissance: Bucovina's Painted Churches (1547-1596)

Georgiana Uhlyarik, Assistant Curator of Canadian Art, AGO

UTAC Art Lounge

Taking as a departure point the Our Lady of the Burning Bush icon on display in the current Malcove Collection installation, Uhlyarik will discuss the iconographic program of five 16th century monasteries in northern Moldova, Romania as it relates to the architectural features of these unique churches. Famous for their fully painted exterior surfaces featuring figurative frescos arranged in narrative registers, these churches represent a renaissance in Moldovan art and culture. Humor, Moldoviţa, Arbore, Voroneţ and Suceviţa were declared UNESCO's World Heritage sites for their rarity and beauty in 1993.

The research for this presentation was generously funded through a 1995 University College Teetzel Traveling Award.
