Justyn Klym (BArch '56) was born in Ukraine in 1929. He emigrated to Canada in 1953 with his Belgian wife, Jacqueline, whom he met while studying architecture at the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts de Bruxelles. He enrolled in the School of Architecture at the University of Toronto, at which time he developed a keen interest in photography. He graduated in the spring of 1956 and left almost immediately for Europe, embarking on a 9-month, 42,000-km journey in a Citroën 2 CV (deux chevaux) with Jacqueline, two 35 mm cameras (a Konica and a Voigtländer) and many rolls of film. It was the first of several extended road trips they took throughout Europe between 1956 and 1960, covering France, Switzerland, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Greece, Yugoslavia, as well as Morocco. These photographs document their travels. Many of the negatives have lain dormant for the last 50 years and were resurrected this summer by Justyn’s youngest son, Mark, also an avid photographer and traveler, to be printed and viewed for the first time in this exhibit.
