Mason White and Lola Sheppard: "Spec Building: A Kind of Practice"
-
Please join us for the first bulthaup Lecture of 2014 featuring Daniels Faculty Associate Professor Mason White and his partner at the firm Lateral Office, Lola Sheppard.
A reception will be held immediately following the lecture in the front lobby of 230 College Street.
Lateral Office was selected to organize and curate the Canadian exhibit at this year’s Venice Biennale of Architecture, which, for the first time in Canada’s involvement in the Biennale, will focus on the Canadian north. The 2014 Canadian Pavilion is entitled “Arctic Adaptations: Nunavut at 15.” The Biennale is among the world’s most prestigious architecture exhibitions, and will take place place June 7 to November 24.
White and Sheppard's January 28th lecture, “Spec Building: A Kind of Practice,” will explore the firm’s recent work in the arctic, for which they received the 2012 Arctic Inspiration Prize and a 2013 Progressive Architecture Award from Architect, the magazine of the American Institute of Architecture.
Lateral Office focuses on architecture that responds directly to the demands of the 21st century, using architecture, landscape architecture and urban design as a tool to confront environmental, climatological, social, and even economic challenges. Sponsors, clients and collaborators have included the City of Memphis, the City of Reykjavik, the City of Toronto, Metis Garden, Harbourfront Centre, Culture and Heritage Nunavut, and the Holcim Foundation, among others. The firm’s work has been exhibited in numerous venues across the United States and Canada, as well as Germany, Iceland, England, and the Faroe Islands.
Lola Sheppard is an Associate Professor at the University of Waterloo. Mason White is an Associate Professor at the University of Toronto's John H. Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape, and Design.
The Daniels Faculty would like to thank bulthaup for its generous sponsorship of this lecture.
