Admission Awards

Newly admitted students are automatically considered for the majority of Daniels admission awards. Recipients will be informed in their offers of admission (or through separate communication) if they will be receiving an admission award. Information about renewable awards will be communicated to recipients throughout their time in the Faculty.

John and Myrna Daniels Scholars Award
Eligible Program(s): MArch, MLA, MUD, MVS
Intended to support the recruitment of outstanding students who have demonstrated financial need. Priority for the awards will be accorded to students who are the first generation of their families to have the opportunity to receive a university graduation. Renewable upon continued eligibility.

John and Myrna Daniels Foundation Opportunity Award
Eligible program(s): MArch, MLA, MUD, MVS
Awarded to students in Daniels graduate programs based on financial need and academic merit. Awards are available starting in the 2020-21 academic year.

University of Toronto Fellowship

Awarded to graduate students on the basis of academic merit.

Professor George Baird Graduate Student Endowment Fund Award
Eligible Program(s): MArch, MLA, MUD, MVS
Awarded to an incoming graduate student registered at the John H. Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape, and Design. The award will be based on academic merit. The selected student(s) will receive a renewal of the award in subsequent years of study at the Daniels Faculty, contingent upon continuing excellence in academic standing and enrolment in the Daniels Faculty program of study.

David Buller Memorial Scholarship
Eligible Program(s): MVS
Awarded to a graduate student entering the Master of Visual Studies program with concentration in Studio Art Practice on the basis of financial need. Academic merit may also be considered. The recipient must be a Canadian citizen/permanent resident, and must meet Ontario residency requirements.

Larry Wayne Richards, MOAA, FRAIC, AIA/IA Admission Fellowship
Eligible Program(s): MArch
Awarded on the basis of academic merit and promise of excellence in the profession of architecture to a student or students entering the Master of Architecture Programme directly from the University of Toronto, Bachelor of Arts in Architectural Studies Program. The recipient must be a Canadian citizen/permanent resident, and meet Ontario residency requirements, and demonstrate financial need, .

Professor Blanche Lemco van Ginkel Admission Scholarship
Eligible Program(s): MArch
Awarded to applicants to the Master of Architecture program, on the basis of their application for first or second year of studies. Applicants will be recommended by the admissions committee based upon a holistic assessment of their application, including academic merit, as well as on the demonstration of financial need.

Patrick J. Bennett Jr. Admission Scholarship
Eligible Program(s): MLA
Awarded to an incoming student on the basis of academic merit and commitment to the community and the environment; evaluated by reference to academic performance, portfolio, and résumé. Renewed in the second and third years of the MLA Programme so long as a standing of A- is maintained and the student re-registers in the MLA programme.

Awarded to a student entering the Master of Architecture Program, based on financial need and demonstrated talent and skills in computation and technical concerns, including computer-aided design and computer-aided representation.

John Yamada Memorial Admission Scholarship
Eligible Program(s): MArch
Awarded to a student entering the first year of the Master of Architecture Program on the basis of rankings of the Admissions Committee.

In Course Awards

In-course awards are conferred based on a student's academic performance and/or financial need while at the Daniels Faculty.  All registered students are automatically considered for most in-course awards. For Daniels in-course awards requiring applications, instructions are communicated directly to students during the academic year.

John H. Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape and Design Award
Eligible Program(s): MArch, MLA, MUD, MVS
The John H. Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape, and Design Award is to be awarded to a graduate student in the John H. Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape, and Design on the basis of financial need. Academic merit may also be considered. Recipients must be Canadian citizens/permanent residents, and must meet Ontario residency requirements.

Howarth-Wright Graduate Fellowship
Eligible Program(s): MArch
Awarded annually to a student in the Master of Architecture program after his or her second or third year on the basis of high academic achievement, interest in the work of Frank Lloyd Wright, research skills in architectural history, and the overall strength of the research proposal. The period of study is a minimum of four months and may include related travel to Frank Lloyd Wright buildings and sites. The recipient will publicly present the results of his or her work at the Faculty, following the completion of the project. As well, he or she will be expected to pursue publication of the research. The fellowship funding will be released as follows: 2/3 at the start of the project; 1/3 upon completion of the project and presentation of the results of the research. The research project must be completed before the recipient enters his or her final academic term. 

Frederick Coates Scholarship/Bursary Fund
Eligible Program(s): MArch, MLA, MUD, MVS
Awarded a) to a graduate student registered in third year who ranks highest in the annual examinations of third year. b) to a graduate student registered in second year who ranks highest in the annual examinations of second year. c) to a graduate student registered in first year who ranks highest in the annual examinations of first year. d) on the basis of financial need to promising students in the graduate programs of the Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape, and Design.

Landscape Architecture Endowment Scholarship
Eligible Program(s): MLA
Awarded to two students, one completing the first and one completing the second year of the Master of Landscape Architecture program, for excellence.

Paul Oberman Graduate Student Endowment Fund Award
Eligible Program(s): MArch; MUD
Awarded to graduate students in the Master of Architecture and Master of Urban Design program who have minimally completed the first year of their program. The award will provide travel and research-related funds. The student(s) to be selected will demonstrate a sense of vision, initiative and passion for how the historic form and the architecture of a city(ies) is being creatively transformed to meet the contemporary demands of society.

WZMH Architects - Oxford Properties Graduate Student Endowment Fund Award
Eligible Program(s): MArch, MUD
Awarded to a graduate student(s) in the Master of Architecture and Master of Urban Design programs who through their research, coursework, and/or studio projects demonstrate an enhanced understanding and innovative approach to the contemporary challenges of large-scale architecture, city-building and commercial development. Preference will be given to those students whose coursework and/or projects reference the combined agency of the design, planning and development communities and the opportunities for greater collaboration between them.

Mary M. Rose Scholarship
Eligible program(s): HBA, Architectural Studies; MArch; MUD
Awarded to student(s) in the Faculty’s Honours, Bachelor of Arts, Architectural Studies; and/or Master of Architecture and/or Master of Urban Design programs on the basis of merit.

Benjamin Hart Lobko Memorial Travel Award
Eligible Program(s): MVS
Awarded to student(s) in the Master of Visual Studies program in either Studio or Curatorial Studies to assist with travel costs for the required internship completed during their program of study. Preference is given to students who plan to travel internationally.

Jules F. Wegman Fellowships
Eligible Program(s): MArch, MLA, MUD, MVS
Awarded to students enrolled in any of the graduate programs within the Faculty based on academic merit.

Peter Prangnell Award
Eligible program(s): HBA, Architectural Studies; HBA Visual Studies; MArch; MLA; MUD; MVS
The award must be used to travel to a specific location where the student(s) will remain for a minimum of a week to study the way architecture, landscape, urban design, or some other aspect of the human-built or modeled environment shapes and/or is shaped by everyday life.The award will be given on the basis of financial need and the merit of the applicants’ proposals. The recipient(s) must be a Canadian citizen/permanent resident, and must meet Ontario residency requirements.

Barbara Allen Memorial Scholarship in Visual Studies
Eligible program(s): HBA, Visual Studies; MVS
Awarded to student(s) registered in the Honours Bachelor of Arts (HBA), Visual Studies, or Master of Visual Studies (MVS) programs based on academic merit and a holistic assessment of their application. Preference will be given to students with a demonstrated interest in exploring painting-based media.

Komala Prabhakar Graduate Student Endowment Fund Award

Awarded to graduate students enrolled in the John H. Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape, and Design.

Adrian DiCastri Graduate Student Endowment Fund Award
Eligible Program(s): MArch
Awarded to Master of Architecture students who have recently completed their first year of study on the basis of academic excellence as demonstrated in the design studios, and financial need.

Reesa Greenberg Award for Curatorial Studies
Eligible Program(s): MVS
Awarded to the student who demonstrates exceptional performance in the first semester of their Master's degree in Visual Studies - Curatorial Studies, including grade point average, and degree of curatorial engagement as evidenced by attendance at lectures, quality of independent projects, and/or related co- or extra-curricular activities in the curatorial field.

George T. Goulstone Fellowship
Eligible program(s): HBA, Architectural Studies; MArch
Provides a student or students in the Architecture program (undergraduate or graduate) with funds to devote themselves to a study of Georgian architecture in England.

PFS Studio Award of Excellence
Eligible program(s): MLA
Awarded to one or two student(s) registered in the Master of Landscape Architecture program with good academic standing who have completed their second year of study and who have demonstrated leadership potential in landscape architecture and furthering the profession's role in city building.

MLA Award for Creative Ecological Design
Eligible Program(s): MLA
Awarded to a student(s) registered in the Master of Landscape Architecture program that has completed their second year of study, who through their studio and course work is demonstrating exceptionally creative ecological design solutions for urban and /or rural contexts. Of these students, preference will be granted to those in financial need.

Professor Jeffery A. Stinson Graduate Student Endowment Fund Award
Eligible Program(s): MArch, MLA, MUD, MVS
Awarded to a graduate student registered at the John H. Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape, and Design. Preference will be given to those students with a demonstrated interest in environmental sustainability, as it relates to a building, landscape, or urban design project in the design studios.

John E. (Jack) Irving Prize
Eligible Program(s): MLA
Awarded to an outstanding student(s) registered in the Master of Landscape Architecture program to assist with the development of their thesis in the final year of the program. The student(s) selected will be considered to have proposed a thesis project that is innovative and informed by opportunities to achieve greater integration between the fields of landscape ecology and landscape architecture.

Imara Graduate Student Endowment Fund Award
Eligible Program(s): MArch, MLA, MUD, MVS
Awarded to a graduate student registered at the John H. Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape, and Design.

Quadrangle Architects Tenth Anniversary Scholarships
Eligible Program(s): MArch
Awarded to a student entering third or fourth year of the Master of Architecture program on the basis of financial need. Academic achievement will also be considered. Eligible students should have completed outstanding design work in the area of multiple unit housing or the adaptive reuse of buildings and show professional promise in one or both of these areas. The recipient must be a Canadian citizen/permanent resident, and must meet Ontario residency requirements.

Ted Teshima Memorial Leadership Award
Eligible Program(s): MArch
Awarded to a student(s) registered in the Master of Architecture program who demonstrates leadership and /or service to the profession. This may include experience volunteering or working in a design firm or office, and/or engagement in co-curricular activities within the John H. Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape, and Design or broader design community.

Eric Ross Arthur Scholarship
Eligible Program(s): MArch
Awarded to the student who has the highest academic standing in third year of the Master of Architecture Program.

Eberhard Zeidler Scholarship
Eligible Program(s): MArch
Awarded to a student concluding the first year of the Master of Architecture program on the basis of academic achievement (grades) in design in the first and second terms of the first year. In the event of a tie, overall academic achievement in the first and second terms of the first year will be the deciding criterion.

Page + Steele Architects Planners Scholarship
Eligible Program(s): MArch
Awarded to a student concluding the third year of the Master of Architecture program, based on excellence in the courses of the third year and on demonstrated potential for leadership in the practice of architecture.

Alfred P. Tilbe Scholarship
Eligible Program(s): MArch
Awarded to Master of Architecture students who have recently completed their second year of study on the basis of overall excellence and exhibited leadership potential in the field.

Faculty of Architecture, Landscape, and Design Scholarship in Landscape Architecture
Eligible Program(s): MLA
Awarded to a student concluding the first year of the Master of Landscape Architecture program, based on academic excellence and financial need.

William Rock, Jr. Memorial Scholarship
Eligible Program(s): MLA
Awarded to a student completing the second year of the Master of Landscape Architecture program who has attained an outstanding academic average with emphasis on design.

Alfred P. Tilbe Memorial Fellowship in Professional Practice
Eligible Program(s): MArch
Awarded to a Master of Architecture student who has recently completed their third year of study on the basis of academic excellence in professional practice within the program.

William S. Goulding Memorial Award in Architectural History
Eligible Program(s): MArch
Awarded to the student completing the third year of the Master of Architecture program who has achieved the highest average in at least three one-term courses in architecture history, of which one must be taken in the third year.

Ontario Association of Architects' Scholarship
Eligible Program(s): MArch
Awarded to a student completing the second year of the Master of Architecture program. Another scholarship is awarded to a student completing the third year of the Master of Architecture program.

Garden Club of Toronto Scholarship
Eligible program(s): MLA
Awarded to a student concluding the second year of the Master of Landscape Architecture program who has attained the highest academic average in the mandatory Plant Ecology courses.

Belinda Sugerman Orling Memorial Fellowship
Eligible Program(s): MArch, MLA, MUD, MVS
Awarded to a student enrolled in any of the graduate programs at the Faculty of Architecture, Landscape, and Design based on financial need and demonstrated academic merit. The recipient must be a Canadian citizen/permanent resident, and must meet Ontario residency requirements.

Awarded to two students completing the first year of the Master of Landscape Architecture program for excellence.

Pamela Manson-Smith Travel Fellowship
Eligible Program(s): MArch, MLA
Awarded on the basis of academic merit and financial need to a student in the Master of Architecture or the Master of Landscape Architecture program. The award will assist the student with a study tour in conjunction with his or her academic performance.

Barry Lorne Ardiel Scholarship
Eligible Program(s): MLA
Awarded to a student completing the second year of the Master of Landscape Architecture program who has exhibited the highest scholastic achievement during that academic session.

Uno Prii Memorial Award for Excellence in Visual Communications
Eligible Program(s): MArch
Awarded to a student completing the first year of the Master of Architecture program who has demonstrated excellence in three-dimensional visual communication.

Colin Campbell Memorial Fellowship for Emerging Artists
Eligible Program(s): MVS
Awarded on the basis of financial need to a graduate student enrolled in the Master of Visual Studies Program. The recipient must be a Canadian citizen/permanent resident, and must meet Ontario residency requirements.

Harry B. Kohl Award
Eligible Program(s): MArch
Awarded to a senior student concluding the second or third year of the Master of Architecture program to attend a conference related to architectural practice or education who has demonstrated his or her capacity to represent the school effectively.

Ontario Graduate Scholarships

The Ontario Graduate Scholarship (OGS) Program recognizes academic excellence in graduate studies at the master's and doctoral levels in all disciplines of academic study. Graduate students at the Daniels Faculty are eligible to apply for Ontario Graduate Scholarships upon entry to, or while registered in, their Daniels program.

Irving Grossman Prize
Eligible Program(s): MArch
Awarded to a Master of Architecture student on the basis of excellence and innovation in the final design thesis in the area of multiple-unit housing or adaptive re-use of buildings for housing purposes; and on the basis of professional promise in one or both of these areas.

Toronto Society of Architects Scholarship
Eligible program(s): MArch, MUD
Awarded to a graduating student in the Master of Architecture or Master of Urban Design program, whose thesis project demonstrates an innovative approach to city building and urban form.

Kuwabara-Jackman Architecture Thesis Gold Medal
Eligible program(s): MArch
Awarded to the student judged by the Faculty to have completed the most outstanding Master of Architecture thesis.

Heather M. Reisman Gold Medal in Design

Awarded to the student graduating from the Faculty of Architecture, Landscape, and Design in recognition of exceptional achievement in design in architecture, landscape architecture, or urban design. 

Architectural Research Centers Consortium (ARCC)/King Student Medal

Awarded based on innovation, integrity, and scholarship in architectural design research.

Faculty Design Prize

Awarded to graduating students in the Master of Architecture, Master of Landscape Architecture or Master of Urban Design programs in recognition of their ability and high achievement in design, as demonstrated over the course of their studies in the program.

Leadership-Based Awards

Alpha Rho Chi Bronze Medal 
Eligible program(s): MArch
Awarded to the graduating senior in the Master of Architecture program who has shown an affinity for leadership, performed willing service for the school or department, and gives promise of real professional merit through his or her attitude and personality. The Alpha Rho Chi Medal commends those students who show true professional merit beyond the design studio and their academic career. 

Ontario Association of Landscape Architects (OALA) Certificate of Merit
Eligible program(s): MLA
Awarded to a student in the Master of Landscape Architecture program on the basis of academic excellence and contribution to the program.

Merit-Based Awards

Canadian Society of Landscape Architects (CSLA) Student Award of Merit
Eligible programs: MLA
Awarded to a graduating student who, in the opinion of the Faculty, exhibits outstanding imagination, innovation and ingenuity in their studies of Landscape Architecture, and who has contributed service to the profession in the school.

Master in Visual Studies Graduating Scholarship
Eligible Programs: MVS
Awarded annually to an outstanding Master of Visual Studies student in their second (graduating) year concentrating in Studio Art Practice who has excelled in both the academic and studio components of the MVS program to aid in the transition from academia to post graduate life. 

Academic Honours Certificate
Eligible programs: MArch, MLA, MUD, MVS
Awarded to the top graduating master's students in recognition of their record of high academic achievement over the course of their studies.

American Institute of Architects (AIA) Henry Adams Medal and Certificate Program
Eligible program(s): MArch
Each year the American Institute of Architects awards an engraved medal and certificate of merit to the top-ranking graduating student in each architecture program accredited by the National Architectural Accrediting Board (or CACB for Canadian schools). A certificate of merit is awarded to the second-ranking graduating student. These awards are provided as part of the AIA Scholarship Program.

American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) Certificate of Honor and Certificate of Merit
Eligible program(s): MLA
Must be truly outstanding and have demonstrated the highest level of academic scholarship and of accomplishments in skills related to the art and technology of Landscape Architecture. Nominees must have demonstrated personal qualities and skills of: responsiveness and willingness to work with others; self-motivation and responsibility; and design abilities (exploration, discovery, synthesis, and representation of landscape architecture design). Student must have maintained a 3.5 CGPA on a 4.0 scale. Faculty can nominate up to 4 students; top 2 for the certificate of honor and second 2 for the certificate of merit.

Royal Architectural Institute of Canada (RAIC) Honour Roll and Medal
Eligible program(s): MArch
Awarded to students of an accredited professional degree program of Architecture in Canada who have achieved high academic standing in the top 10% of their graduating class. For each School of Architecture, a maximum of four students from the top 10 per cent of the graduating class shall receive honour roll certificates from Architecture Canada.

In addition the top student shall also receive the RAIC Student Medal. The Royal Architectural Institute of Canada Medal is awarded annually to a student graduating from a professional degree program in each accredited University School of Architecture in Canada who, in the judgment of the faculty of the respective School, has achieved the highest level of academic excellence and/or has completed the outstanding final design project/thesis for that academic year.

Ontario Association of Architects (OAA) Architectural Guild Medal
Eligible program(s): MArch
Awarded annually to the graduating Master of Architecture student with the highest grade.

External Awards

Each year, the Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape, and Design nominates recent graduates or final-year students to these external awards.

Prix de Rome in Architecture for Emerging Practitioners
Eligible Program(s): MArch
Awarded by the Canada Council for the Arts to a recent graduate from a Canadian architectural school who has demonstrated exceptional potential in contemporary architectural design. With this prize, the recipient may visit architectural buildings and carry out an internship at an internationally renowned architectural firm anywhere in the world. The prize recipient will have the opportunity to broaden his or her knowledge of contemporary architecture culture by visiting a selection of works of architecture. The recipient will also be able to expand her or his professional skills through an internship at an internationally acclaimed architectural firm, anywhere in the world.

Canadian Architect Student Awards of Excellence
Eligible program(s): MArch, HBA
Awarded by Canadian Architect Magazine for design excellence in architecture students’ final year projects.  

 

School of Graduate Studies Awards

Graduate students at the Daniels Faculty are eligible to apply for scholarships, awards and bursaries offered through the University of Toronto School of Graduate Studies (SGS). 

University of Toronto Awards

As University of Toronto undergraduate students, Daniels graduate students are also eligible for admission, in-course and graduating awards offered by the University of Toronto. A list of available central awards and scholarships can be found here.
