Selected Topics in Urban Design: History and Urban Morphology in Toronto

URD1503H S
Instructor: Michael McClelland
Meeting Section: L0101
Wednesday, 6:00 - 9:00pm

This course will focus on the urban morphology of Toronto and its impact on recent and contemporary developments. This course is not intended to be a full of exhaustive telling of a canonic history of the city, but instead explores the idea of multiple histories creating narratives having value. The intent is for students to understand how history and an historical context may affect their work as practitioners. Each session will include the exploration of the history of a particular part of the city fabric, a discussion around how heritage, patrimony, and cultural value are identified and valued, and the consideration of a contemporary development within that area. Visiting speakers will be engaged in the classes to broaden the discussion and level of debate. It is also hoped that some of the sessions will be planned as walking tours, which will be coordinated with students once the course begins
