Laser Cutters

There are 4 Universal Laser Systems located in the Laser Cutter Lab. These laser cutters can accurately and quickly laser cut intricate designs over a wide variety of materials, including acrylic, wood, cardstock and textiles. They contain honeycomb cutting tables that hold materials without fixtures and remove smoke and debris that can have effect overall quality.

Hours of Operation:

  • Monday to Friday, 10:00 AM – 6:00 PM

After Hours:

  1. Monday to Friday, 6:00 PM - 10:00 PM
  2. Saturday 12:00 PM - 6:00 PM

Who is on duty:

Daytime - Paul

After Hours - Laser Cutter TAs

Cost:

  • Laser cutting is 33 cents per minute ($20 per hour), students may use a maximum of 1.5 hours per day.
  • During peak periods, students may use a maximum of three 1.5-hour time slots in one week.

Have your files completely prepared before you start your session, because you are charged by the minute.

The Woodshop also sells various materials from the Model Workshop, including: Millboard, basswood, Acrylic, Aeroply, Birchply

Mandatory Test

Everyone who uses the laser cutter must pass the mandatory test. If you passed it last year, please read this manual before using the laser cutter, or sit in on a tutorial as a refresher. Tutorials will be offered regularly. Watch for a schedule to be posted. There is a maximum of four students for each tutorial. The tutorials are about 2 hours long.

Approved materials:

  • Millboard
  • Acrylic
  • Aeroply/Birchply
  • Basswood
  • For everything else, ask Paul/Deagan or Laser Cutter TAs.

MDF is no longer an approved material for laser cutting. 

If inappropriate materials are used, dangerous fumes may be produced (e.g., chlorine). If in doubt, ASK Paul/Deagan.

Mandatory Templates

All cut files must be prepared using the templates found below. Copy, Paste and Save your shapes to one of the AutoCad templates prior to arriving to the laser cutter room. Using these templates will not only protect the laser cutters from accidental damage but will also maximize your time at the machine thus saving you money.
