Landscape Architecture Competitions
LAN3200H S
Instructor: Alissa North
Meeting Section: LEC0101
Friday 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
This course examines several of the most notable and exciting landscape architecture competitions from across Canada, which have defined the trajectory and direction of contemporary practice. Lectures will examine the shortlisted entries for each competition, to understand the theoretical and technical trends of the discipline, within a chronological context.
Learning as much from the proposed designs as the implemented ones, course members will gain a broad understanding of leading Canadian and international landscape architecture practices and their design approaches. Along with participating in class discussions, students will exercise the knowledge gained from the course in an actual invited ideas competition, for the design of a town square in Perth, Ontario.
Assignments
Readings Lead / Discussion—Lecture classes will commence with the instructor presenting two competitions, followed by a class discussion. The discussion will centre around the landscape architecture competitions that were presented, along with two associated competition readings. Students will be assigned to guide the readings discussions, and will be graded for this, as well as their participation in all the discussions.
P1 Competition Analysis / Concept Development—In teams of two, students will gather information about the competition site and context, producing analytical diagrams, along with the development of a concept to help guide their proposed competition submission.
P2 Competition Submission / Presentation—Students will work on the competition submission, with classes dedicated to feedback on this work, where the instructor will meet with each team individually. A shortlist of selected work will be presented to town members, with ideas competition results announced after jury meeting.
