Landscape Architecture Topics: Contemporary Approaches in Planting Design

LAN3500H S
Instructor: Alissa North
Meeting Section: L0101
Wednesday, 12:00PM - 3:00PM

This elective course takes a deep dive into the use of plants in contemporary works of landscape architecture. The classes will examine a variety of exemplary as well as lesser-known works where planting design is highly considered and well-executed. Relation to ecosystems will connect design intent with the reality of how vegetation thrives. Planting design will be understood from the use of the specimen to ecological planting strategies—from perennial gardens to natural infrastructure.

Part of the course will include lectures, which the instructor and invited guests will deliver, and will be followed by class discussions. Three course assignments will be interspersed, which will provide opportunity for students to further develop their aptitude in planting design, work alongside the instructor individually and in small groups to develop their work, and to hone their visual and verbal presentation skills in sharing their projects with classmates.
