23.08.13 - New hospital addition designed by Farrow Partnership Architects featured in ReNew Canada
A new expansion of St. Mary's Hospital in Sechelt, British Columbia — designed by Farrow Partnership Architects and Perkins+Will Canada — was recently featured in ReNew Canada magazine.
“The physical environment of a hospital has a significant effect on the healing process," Tye Farrow (BArch, 1987) told ReNew. "For example, by allowing patients some control over their environment, as simple as access to daylight or being able to view or tour a garden, can reduce stress.” Farrow is a senior partner at Farrow Partnership Architects, which specializes in health design. The firm has designed over a dozen hospitals throughout Canada.
The new LEED Gold certified addition is North America's first carbon-neutral hospital and "includes new larger emergency and radiology departments, intensive care rooms, and a new labour and delivery unit, all of which are equipped with state-of-the-art equipment," reports ReNew Canada.
The project also "includes 125 boreholes, each 250 feet deep, which provide a source of zero-carbon energy for heating and cooling the building."
