08.06.12 - Recent graduates Peggy Pei-Chi Chi and Han Liu receive honourable mentions in AECOM's Urban SOS 2011 Competition

Congratulations to newly graduated Daniels students Peggy Pei-Chi Chi and Han Liu — both received 'honourable mentions' in AECOM's Urban SOS 2011 Competition.

The goal of the AECOM Academic Design Competition is to provide students with a practical application of multidisciplinary environmental engineering principles to supplement material that they are exposed to via the classroom.

Liu's submission (pictured above) re-envisioned the relationship between the lake and the land within the Toronto West Waterfront: "The idea is to bring the wilderness and beauty of nature into the city lakefront by creating 'inland lakes" and 'coastal wetlands.'"

Pei-Chi Chi's submission focused on  a segment of the Florida Avenue Canal in New Orleans, Louisiana. Her proposal involved relieving the municipal drainage system by incorporating local water management strategies into communities, and involving the communities themselves. This engagement would, in turn, facilitate stronger connections between the people who live along the canal.

According to AECOM, this year’s honorable mentions represent an incredibly diverse range of proposals, universities, and geographies. Along with the finalists, they represent the top scoring of nearly 200 entries submitted from student teams worldwide, from Massachusetts to Madagascar
