16.03.12 - Daniels Alumnus David Pontarini designs towers for "tough, tight spots in the urban core"

Daniels Alumnus David Pontarini (BArch, 1983) of Hariri Pontarini Architects has been hired to design a new tower at 197 Yonge Street, across from the Eaton Centre and behind the "be columned, long-vacant bank standing there today," writes John Bentley Mays in today's Globe and Mail. The proposed 60-storey building will be called Massey Tower. Mays describes it as "an infill project proposed for a tough, tight spot in the urban core."

Last Friday, Mays wrote about a similar tough, tight spot at the intersection of Portland Street and King Street West, where Pontarini is also designing a building. A 450-unit, 18 storey project has been imagined for the oddly-shaped site, which has been cobbled together from "two small scraps of available land inside a block of old warehouses and office structures just east of Bathurst Street." Daniels lecturer and urban planner Ken Greenberg has also been brought on board to provide advise on how to best connect the proposed building to nearby streets.
