21.10.11 - External event: Staying the Course with Waterfront Plans
The Canadian Urban Institute and the Cities Centre, University of Toronto invite you to attend a special evening seminar celebrating the 10th anniversary of the formation of Waterfront Toronto and World Town Planning Day: Staying the Course with Waterfront Plans – What Can We Learn From the First Decade?
In November 2001, the City of Toronto, the province and the federal government appointed Waterfront Toronto (then known as the Toronto Waterfront Revitalization Corporation) to “oversee all aspects of the planning and development of Toronto’s central waterfront.” After a decade of planning, extensive consultation, creative problem-solving and significant investments in infrastructure, the vision for creating a “dynamic blue edge” is beginning to take shape in the form of parks like Sugar Beach and award-winning buildings such as Corus Quay. Major developers are preparing to bring large parcels to market, and the West Don Lands are now on a fast track to accommodate the Athletes Village for the Pan/Parapan Am Games in 2015.
Inevitably, however, some parts of the 2000 acre site are being revitalized more quickly than others. After a vigorous, very public debate about the pace of progress in the Port Lands, Toronto City Council agreed to speed up redevelopment and review the environmental assessment for a flood prevention plan to create a new, naturalized mouth for the Don River. A decade into a project that has few peers in terms of its size and complexity, what has been learned about how to balance short-term expectations with longer term goals? What better way to celebrate World Town Planning Day?
