07.09.12 - Assistant Professor Mason White and Lateral Office participate in international symposium and exhibition in Alaska
Assistant Professor Mason White, and the work of Lateral Office, is included in an international symposium called “Next North” and an exhibition called “True North” at the Anchorage Museum of Art in Alaska.
On Sept. 5-8, the Anchorage Museum hosts the “Next North Symposium,” an in-depth discussion of the primary issues facing the circumpolar North today. Participants include prominent scientists, architects, anthropologists, artists and indigenous culture bearers from around the globe. The symposium is a collaboration between the Anchorage Museum, Art Gallery of Alberta, and Alaska Design Forum. The symposium is the closing event for the exhibition "True North," which features work of the symposium participants. Recent development of Lateral Office’s project Arctic Food Network and the installation Active Layer is featured in the exhibition.
True North offers a compelling narrative for the increased relevancy of the North, particularly Northerners’ unique perspective on man’s evolving relationship with the environment, said Anchorage Museum Chief Curator Julie Decker. "These artists are attempting to define place — not the romantic North of earlier generations but the next North, one that is connected, pivotal and conflicted."
