28.04.14 - Student Leaders honoured at the University of Toronto's 2014 Gordon Cressy Awards

Congratulations to Daniels Faculty students Kelly Ma, Francesca Annabel Joyce, Doug Robb, Emilia Hurd, and Nada Kawar. Each have been honoured with a 2014 Gordon Cressy Student Leadership Award!

2014 marks the 20th Anniversary of The Cressy Awards, which were established in 1994 by the University of Toronto Alumni Association (UTAA) and the Division of University Advancement in order to recognize graduating students who have made outstanding extra-curricular contributions to their college, faculty or school, or to the university as a whole.

The awards were named after Gordon Cressy in recognition of his commitment to higher education and his leadership in fundraising and community service. The qualities of leadership and dedication demonstrated by Mr. Cressy during his six years with the university are also embodied in the efforts of students chosen to receive this award.

As president of the International Student Ministry Kelly Ma has been helping ensure that international students have an enjoyable and meaningful experience at U of T. She has done this by — among other things — hosting social events, such as a Thanksgiving Camp in Muskoka.

Francesca Joyce has been the volunteer manager of Cafe 059 in the Daniels Faculty. In addition to managing over 30 volunteers who work at the cafe, she has organized social nights, become a student advocate, and helped curate student exhibitions. She was also captain the Daniels Faculty’s intramural girls soccer team.

Before being elected this year’s president of the Graduate Architecture Landscape and Design Student Union (GALDSU) Doug Robb, was the union’s secretary. He has been a strong student advocate on the Faculty’s transition to One Spadina, and a driving force behind events, exhibitions, and publications to showcase student work.

Emilia Hurd can be seen sharing some of the work that she has had the opportunity to do at the Daniels Faculty in our Boundless by Design video. (Haven’t seen it? Watch it here.) Last year, she was the Health and Sustainability Officer at GALDSU, and she has been a class representative in years past.

Nada Kawar played a leading role in organizing the Daniels Faculty’s first undergraduate orientation week. She was also the financial officer of the Bachelor of Arts Architectural Atudies Society (BAASS) executive, a crucial role for the organization.
