08.04.13 - Centre for Landscape Research helps Lakeview residents visualize a new waterfront

Residents in the Mississauga's Lakeview neighbourhood have a clear idea of what their waterfront could soon look like thanks to help from the Centre for Landscape Research (CLR) at the John H. Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape, and Design.

Last week, plans to revitalize the derelict waterfront were unveiled at the Mississauga Seniors Centre. Associate Professor John Danahy — Coordinator of Research and Co-Director of CLR — has worked closely with the community to help it work through different ideas for the area using digital visualization techniques. A short video of a presentation Danahy gave on his experience working with the Lakeview Legacy project can be found here.

CLR began in the early 1980’s in conjunction with graphics and user interface research into computer aided design (CAD) and geographic information systems (GIS). The laboratory has specialized in projective urban modeling and visualization.

Lakeview residents in Mississauga are looking forward to creating a natural park that will bring people down to the waterfront. "The plan includes a curvy cobble beach and a variety of habitats, including a wetland for birds and fish to flourish," reports mississauga.com.

Ward 1 Councillor Jim Tovey recently visited CLR to take a 3D virtual tour of the project.

"It was marvellous," he told mississauga.com. "We were sitting on top of the coal pile looking at the Toronto skyline."
