02.02.15 - Work by Daniels Faculty students projected onto highrises as part of São Paulo's 461st birthday celebrations

On January 25 2015, the city of São Paulo, Brazil celebrated its 461st birthday, with public events taking place on the Minhocão, a 3.5 kilometre elevated highway that’s closed to cars in the evenings and on Sundays, and turned over to the public. Over the past three years, the Minhocão has been the site for projects by Daniels Faculty students enrolled in Global Architecture courses.

As part of São Paulo's festivities, students had their work projected on the side of three large high-rises. Over 60,000 people attended the event.

The Daniels Faculty’s Global Architecture courses offer graduate students the opportunity to study abroad within a design and research-oriented summer program. Courses are taught by Daniels Faculty members, as well as leading architects and faculty from abroad.

In 2012, 2013, and 2014, students traveled to São Paulo Brazil. As part of each course, organized by Alexander Pilis, Brazilian students from various universities in São Paulo were invited to develop site-specific projects with those from the Daniels Faculty. An extensive lecture series, featuring architects, urbanists, and cultural theorist from São Paulo was also organized in conjunction with the design studio. In addition, students were able to travel to Rio de Janeiro and Brasilia.

A publication documenting last summer's expedition has now been published and can be purchased online.
