25.03.12 - Spacing Toronto launches series on laneway housing projects by Daniels students
Spacing Toronto kicked off a new web series today on student work that grew out of a studio at the Daniels Facutly on laneway housing. Utako Tanebe's project — a purpose-built narrow space rooming house for international students — is featured in the first post.
The studio course was led by Associate Professor Brigitte Shim of Shim-Sutcliffe Architects, and Instructor Donald Chong of Williamson Chong Architects. Writer Shawn Micallef, Canadian Journalism Fellow at the University of Toronto's Massy College, initiated the series after sitting in on the studio last semester.
"It's one thing to write about architecture and the final product, as I have done for some time now, but another to see the creative process at work," writes Micallef. "That process has always been something of a mystery to me -- as are many creative processes I'm not involved in -- so it was extremely valuable to watch it unfold."
