17.10.11 - 36km: The Art of Toronto's Laneways on exhibit now in the LWR Gallery

Students, faculty, and visitors to the Daniels Faculty at 230 College Street have no doubt noticed the colourful exhibit in the LWR Gallery across from the front desk. The many photographs are the work of Master of Architecture student Danielle Sernoskie, who compiled the collection for her summer 2011 Independent Study with Professor Laura Miller.

"As part of an Independent Study, I spent this past summer locating, navigating and photographing the various types of laneways within Toronto's Downtown Core," writes Sernoskie. "Through  exploration of this Non-Grid, my intent was to create a series of maps indicating where these sites were -- photographing them extensively to get an idea of their value to the city as a potential secondary pedestrian corridor or as a new type of outdoor urban space. What I was not expecting was to come away from this project with a set of images that went beyond the processional journey. While many of the spaces within my research perimeter -- Bloor Street to the north, Bathurst Street to the west, Parliament Street to the east and Lake Ontario to the south -- remain relatively under-used, untouched and uninspiring, there are many which have surrendered themselves to the creative minds and quick hands of the elusive graffiti artist.  Call their work art or call it vandalism. Love it or hate it. It's there! Like an enormous outdoor art gallery waiting to be discovered. Ever-evolving and completely unpredictable."

36km: The Art of Toronto's Laneway will be on display in the LWR Gallery until October 29.
