27.09.10 - Scent Garden by el-Khoury, Adams, Dixon, Masoud published in Landscape Architecture China

Scent Garden, designed by Professor Rodolphe el-Khoury with Drew Adams (MArch 4), James Dixon (MArch '10), and Fadi Masoud (MLA '10) has been included in the Chinese publication Landscape Architecture China, Issue No. 4 - 2010.

Scent Garden was commissioned for the 2011 World Horticultural Exposition in Xi’an, China. Scent Garden forms an immersive environment that combines natural elements with embedded, digital technology to delight all the senses while favoring smell. Terraced conifer groves and beds of rosemary and thyme create a visual and tactile connection to Xi'an while deploying a distinct olfactory picture. Against this, motion sensor-activated scent poles diffuse plant extracts to complement these fragrances with exotic accents evoking other locales and creating an olfactory map of China. The Xi’an Scent Garden promises to be both spectacular and intimate. Its constellation of glowing scent poles creates an iconic image that denotes the garden as a public space, while its nuanced sensory readings provide sheltered and individual experiences for visitors.

Scent Garden is also currently featured in an exhibition titled 'Scentscapes: Immersive Environments Inspired by Xi'an' by Rodolphe el-Khoury and Robert Levit, Daniels Faculty and  partners in the Toronto architecture firm Khoury Levit Fong. The exhibition is at WORKshop Gallery, 80 Bloor Street West, Lower Concourse and runs to October 2, 2010.
