Results of international architecture competition Griffintown Interrupted on display at the Darling Foundry, January 17-23, 2011.

In October 2010, international ideas competition Griffintown Interrupted was launched, calling for temporary structures in one of the city’s most contentious districts. In response, forty-three teams of architects and designers from ten countries came forward to propose innovative, temporary structures on five sites throughout Griffintown.

Driven by local stakeholders, print and social media, international participants, academics, designers, weblogs and web developers, the competition itself has become a platform for local and global participation. The goal of this ideas competition was to generate discourse around incremental urban growth and temporary architecture. Griffintown is a paradigm case of the ‘in-between’— the phenomenon of uncertain urban growth emerging in cities around the world. Griffintown Interrupted aimed to demonstrate how temporary structures can change perceptions about out-of-use sites, while testing innovative building systems and strategies, and embracing local collaborations.

These proposals for Griffintown will be on display at the Darling Foundry, running January 17-23, 2011, 12:00-4:00 pm.
