28.06.12 - Daniels faculty, students, and alumni participate in MOVE: The Transportation Expo

A number of Daniels faculty, students, and alumni are participating in an exhibition MOVE: The Transportation Expo, being held at the Evergreen Brickworks in Toronto from June 30th until October 28.

MOVE is a multi-sensory tour of the past, present and future of transportation; an exploration of the innovative ideas and technologies needed to build and connect our communities in efficient and sustainable ways.

Organized in partnership with Evergreen and the Institute Without Boundaries, the exhibition was inspired by the fact that Toronto has one of the worst commute times in the world. "Currently home to over six million people, the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA) is expected to grow to almost 9 million people by 2031," says MOVE's website. "That means 3 million more people vying for space on already clogged highways and packed transit vehicles."

The exhibits were designed based on multiple charrettes, each of which brought together experts, stakeholders, professionals, and scholars in various fields related to transportation to tackle different challenges.

Daniels Assistant Professors Carol Moukheiber and Christos Marcopoulos acted as Team Experts for one of the exhibits entitled "Gigaregion," which looked at moving people and products in populated regions of the future.

Daniels Alumnus Denise Pinto (MLA 2011) facilitated the team behind the exhibition "The Parkway of Least Resistance," which investigated the idea of using nature's corridors to move through the city. Alumni Karen May and Rob Shostak participated in this project as well.

Other former University of Toronto students who helped design exhibits for MOVE include Matthew Spremulli, Todd Smith, and Alejandro Lopez.
