31.03.11 - Professor Etienne Turpin lectures at Power Plant Contemporary Art
"a that which is not yet a what: on the visual economy of Das Auge"
Sunday Scene Lecture
Power Plant Contemporary Art
27 March, 2011
In the context of Thomas Hirschhorn's exhibition Das Auge (The Eye), the lecture tries to answer three questions: if Das Auge can only see red, how does this visual economy of the situation (a 'that') challenge the accumulation of context (a 'what')? If we can never see red as mere brightness, saturation, and hue, that is, as colour only, what other suspicious habits arrange our vision? And, if the eye does not perceive what it sees, how can we learn to suspend our sensuous (dis-)belief as an ethics of perception?
