10.05.12 - Daniels students receive fellowships to help build Maximum City
This summer, Daniels students Roxanne Bejjany and Javid
Alibhai will join interns from U of T’s Ontario Institute for Studies in
Education (OISE) to help highschool students gain a better
understanding of how cities are planned, built, and governed.
Bejjany and Alibhai will assist in organizing and implementing Maximum City, an award-winning program that offers grade 8-12 students
the opportunity to learn from a team of local experts on urban issues from public
transit and planning to architecture and urban design. Using the city of
Toronto as their classroom, students will be able to participate in public
consultation sessions and field visits, and ask questions of city hall staff,
architects, consultants, and advocates.
Maximum City is hosted by The University of Toronto Schools and the John H. Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape, and Urban Design. In addition to inspiring the next generation of urbanists, the goal of the not-for-profit program is strengthen our understanding of how cities and towns are built and governed by further
developing and formalizing urban studies curricula at the high school level. The cirriculum developed will be shared with other educators and academics, and students who enrol in the program will
have the option of participating in research interviews, media appearances, and
longitudinal studies to help further the program's impact and reach.
Grade 8-12 students interested in applying for the program
can download an application from the Maximum City website. The deadline for
applying for the program is June 4.
