25.10.12 - Erika Richmond and Peggy Pei-Chi Chi highly commended for The Barge Walk

Daniels graduates Erika Richmond and Peggy Pei-Chi Chi (MLA 2012) recently received accolades for a proposal to reconnect people with the waterside by the Canary Wharf Business park in London, England. Their project, The Barge Walk, was selected as one of three "highly commended designs" in the Landscape Institute's High Line for London ideas competition, which asked participants to come up with ways to bring "hidden, forgotten, and abandoned places into use as new green public spaces."

"The Barge Walk seeks to reconnect people with the water through the creation of a linear park, farm and wetland on barges anchored at the edge of the wharf. By bringing park space to the area, a unique amenity is created without sacrificing valuable real estate. The Barge Walk will insert life into a sterile working neighborhood, attracting locals and visitors," write Richmond and Chi. "The modularity of the Barge Walk allows for individual barges to break off and travel to other sites around London, seeding the barge walk around the city and becoming a model for a park system that is adaptable to rising sea levels."

The High Line competition and Richmond and Chi's winning entry have received press coverage in The Londonist, The City Planter, Architect's Journal, and The Telegraph.
