25.09.12 - An Te Liu presents White Dwarf at Nuit Blanche

On September 29, Associate Professor An Te Liu presents White Dwarf as part of Scotiabank Nuit Blanche 2012. A floating orb composed of obsolete domestic artifacts, its title comes from the term given to dying stars in our galaxy — those which have lost their energy and imploded into degenerate matter. In this work, Liu creates a moribund assemblage of that which was once 'new' but now dormant and fading. Once novel, desirable, and advanced, these remnants of our recent consumer past have outlived their use value, and their promises of convenience, comfort and pleasure. Here they have calcified into a spherical crust embedded with familiar objects, silently spinning, eventually to a stop.

White Dwarf is part of the exhibition Museum for the End of the World, curated by Michael Prokopow and Janine Marchessault. The exhibition features artists Douglas Coupland, Thomas Blanchard, Iris Häussler, Sarah Beck, Jean
Michel Crettaz, Mark-David Hosale, Dana Claxton, Geoffrey Pugen, Joshua
Bonnetta, An Te Liu, Tania Mouraud, Christine Davis, Marco Brambilla,
The Nathaniel Dett Chorale.

An Te Liu's installations and sculptures explore issues of function, dysfunction, and cultural coding in our built and hypothesized environments. His work has been exhibited internationally and is included in the permanent collections of SFMOMA, the Art Institute of Chicago and the Art Gallery of Ontario.

White Dwarf is located in the Toronto City Hall rear loading dock,
