10.04.13 - Responsive architecture for the body: Stacie Vos' "smart" shirts featured in U of T Magazine
Responsive Architecture at Daniels, better known as the RAD Lab, has developed a "smart" blanket. Now it's researching the development of "smart" shirts. U of T Magazine recently published an online article on intelligent clothing, designed by Stacie Vos (MArch 2012) as part of her master thesis.
Reports, U of T Magazine's Patchen Barrs:
The shirt monitors the wearer’s vital signs, as well as their immediate surroundings. If the wearer develops a fever, or the environment becomes toxic, the shirt extends its collar into a face mask that, through its multiple folds, enhances the performance of the latest filtration technologies.
Part medical device and part fashion statement, the mask balances form and function – a goal common to both fashion and building design.
Assistant Professor Carol Moukheiber, Director and co-founder of the RAD Lab, has worked with Vos on the development of the shirt, which brings "the principles of architecture close to the body."
