17.04.13 - New website by U of T architecture grad helps Torontonians share information on condos
With over 40,000 condo units under construction in Toronto, sorting through the sea of information isn't easy for those in the market for a new home. A new website called Dirt designed by Brandon G. Donnelly, who received an undergraduate degree in architecture and art history from the University of Toronto in 2006, aims to make sense of all the cranes and new buildings that dot the city's skyline.
Visitors to the website can upload known condo projects at various stages in the development process. Each site is represented on a city map. Click on a pin and you'll be provided with information on the developer, the architect, and whether or not the building has been approved by city hall. Photos of the building are also provided, as well as the opportunity for users to comment on the developers, design, or other aspects of the project.
"Our mission is to empower consumers through improved transparency in the market and better access to information," says Donnelly, who completed an MArch at the University of Pennsylanvia and an MBA a U of T. "We think a social community is the way to do that."
Dirt's homepage includes statistics on the number of condo buildings represented, as well as the number of units in each phase of development, from approvals and construction to pre-regristration and sales. Users can give "props" (similar to a Facebook "like") to different projects, and top condos (those with the most "props") are listed on the homepage.
